A Walk in the Woods
June 30 - August 2, 2020
Waterstone Gallery
I became the primary caregiver for my Mother two years ago. While this has been a terrific opportunity to spend more time with her and nourish our relationship, it has precluded any long distance travel. So we decided that she would come with me on a more regional adventure where I could explore new creative endeavors while still being able to take care of her.
We spent the month of April 2019 at some friends' home in Sunriver, near Bend, in Central Oregon. The purpose of this self-directed artist retreat was to make a drawing each day of landscapes I am less familiar with, as I have done in Australia, French Polynesia, and Easter Island. While there are a few artworks from those previous excursions, most of the artworks included in the exhibition are based on drawings done in Central Oregon. I completed 30 drawings in 28 days.
The bas relief paintings are acrylic on carved linoleum. I have also created seven etchings. In these etchings I tried to be as true to the orginal pen and ink drawings as I could, trying to capture the line quality and mark making, while including additional narrative elements. I used watercolors sparingly to bring out focal points in the prints.
These narratives for me are metaphors of my internal life refelected in the external world as I navigate my way through it.
